How to bargain fairly in third world markets.

Bargaining is a two way process and it’s important that both sides feel they have done well from the bargain.

Don’t try to screw every penny out of the deal. A dollar to you is trivial but is more important to the seller. Accept that they will try to rip you off but that’s part of the game. If you don’t want to play the game, just walk away, or better still, avoid the place altogether.

Never make the first offer, always get the seller to state their price first.

Don’t buy the first time round. Shop around to get an idea of the going prices. It will send a message to the seller that you might buy from someone else, and it will make your bargaining easier.

To get the best price just walk away. Tell the seller you like it but it’s too expensive. You’ll find the price goes down more the nearer you are to leaving. The seller needs to sell more than you need to buy.

And remember it’s their way of life and they have to make a living. So join in and enjoy yourself. You can always walk away.

Leon’s Christmas Newsletter As He Cycles Through China To Hong Kong

Hey everyone!

To followers old and new, welcome, and thanks for showing an interest in my travels.

I’ve been on the road now for 225 days and have covered roughly 13,000 kilometres
(or 8,500 miles.) The journey has been incredible in so many ways, but it’s not done
yet – not by a long shot! I’m writing this from Bangkok, having arrived here from
Australia just over a week ago.

Rest, relaxation and acclimatization have been the order of the day and I’m now ready
to tackle the roads of South East Asia. I leave tomorrow heading through eastern
Thailand until I reach the border with Cambodia. From there I’ll pass through places
such as Angkor Wat and Phnom Penh, before traveling into Laos. The flexible plan
onwards is north along the Mekong, east to Vietnam, north once more along the coast
and then finally through China towards Hong Kong.

It feels a little like the last leg of the journey, and in some ways it is because I’m at
least on the same landmass as my end goal of Hong Kong. On the other hand there’s
still in the region of 5,000 – 7,000 kilometres between here and there, and
undoubtedly countless new adventures and experiences to be had.

Your supportive emails and comments are always greatly appreciated, and I hope you
are all enjoying following my travels – I certainly love writing about them.

Make sure to check out my recent blogs on my time in NZ and Australia at
www.leonmccarron.com
and you can see all the latest photos at
www.leonmccarron.com/photos.html

Finally, as always, this trip is aiming to raise money for the great work done by
UNICEF and you can donate at
www.justgiving.com/leonmccarron

Until the next newsletter, take care all, and have a very Merry Christmas!
Cheers
Leon

Guurrbi Tours – One of Australia’s Ultimate Must-Do Experiences

Guurrbi – – Award Winning Aboriginal Tours

“An amazing journey of story and dreaming, birthing and beginning”
Andrew Fairley, Turtle Cove, Fiji.

These magical award-winning Aboriginal tours with Nugal-warra Elder, Wilfred (Willie) Gordon, are now listed as One of Australia’s Ultimate Must-Do Experiences.

Willie, the traditional story-keeper of the Nugal-warra clan, takes guests to his ancestral rock art sites at Wangaar-Wuri, high in the hills above Hope Vale, outside Cooktown. Here he shares the stories behind the art, and explains how the cave paintings speak of the essence of life and the lores of his people.

With his great smile and infectious laugh, Willie gives an amazing insight into Aboriginal culture and society, and shows how we all have a spiritual place, wherever we come from.
